Students of Marine Park performed and displayed the many sides of Marine Park. The Jazz Ensemble began the evening with a performance of "A Nite at the Blue Note" by M. Carubia and "Stormy Weather" arranged by M. Taylor. Prospective students and their parents were then taken on tours of the building to learn about the many wonderful things Marine Park I.S. 278 has to offer.

Marine Park Jazz groups have gone to visit P.S. 222 and P.S. 312 to showcase some of the many opportunities students may have at our school if they select to attend Marine Park in the future. 12.17.13Marine Park Jazz Ensemble Performs for the Chancellor

The students of the Marine Park Jazz Ensemble were invited to perform for the Chancellor's Holiday Party on Tuesday, December 17th, 2013. It was an honor to perform for the chancellor in the renowned Tweed Courthouse building. Students were conducted by director Candis Pohl, and chaperoned by proud principal, Debra Garofalo. What an unforgettable evening!

11.08.10Students Become Rock Stars with Good Charlotte

Monday, November 8th was VH1's Save the Music Foundation Gala '10 at Cipriani's in lower Manhattan, NYC. At the event musicians and music industry personnel were honored for their support of music education through VH1's Save the Music Foundation. The honorees were Julie Andrews, Legend, Paul Williams (ASCAP Foundation) and John Mayer. Cheyenne Jackson hosted the event and performers included Kristen Chenoweth, Jason Mraz and Natasha Bedingfield. The final performance of the evening was Joel and Benji Madden, from Good Charlotte, with Stephen Hannan and Danny Carlson from Marine Park I.S. 278. They performed an arrangement of the song "Good Riddance/ Time of Your Life" by Green Day. It was an unforgettable night. Pictures will be posted soon.

08.24.10Marine Park Rocks with Generous American Idol Star

The Jazz Ensemble of Marine Park was pleasantly surprised during a performance in Manhattan by the American Idol Star, Adam Lambert! Not only did he surprise them, but he brought gifts! He donated $1,000.00 worth of Reeds to the school through the program DonorsChoose.org. He is an avid believer in supporting music and arts education and is an advocate for the DonorsChoose.org program. After the performance, Lambert and his bandmates sat and spoke with the students and discussed what its like to be on tour and how the star writes music. The rhythm section was taught the introduction and bassline to Lambert's current hit single, "If I Had You." Adam Lambert also gave each child a copy of his new CD and then took the time to autograph each one of them! (Pictures will be posted soon.)

05.24.10Marine Park Wins Gold at NYSSMA 2010

This year was an exceptional year of achievements for the bands at Marine Park I.S. 278. Both Jazz Bands performed Level 4 music at this year's NYSSMA Music Festival and both walked away with a Gold Medal! In addition, the Marine Park Symphonic Band also earned a Gold Medal for their oustanding Level 4 performance. Congratulations!

04.14.10Steven Reineke, N.Y. Pops Conductor, Comes to Visit Marine Park

Steven Reineke, N.Y. Pops conductor and renowned composer came to help Marine Park's Symphonc Band prepare for their statewide and northeast regional music competitions. He conducted and rehearsed his composition "Fate of the Gods," which the students performed during their competitions. He spoke of what inspired him to write the piece 9 years ago and what he intended each section to represent. His visit will never be forgotten! He was even able to sign a piece of his music which is hanging in the Music Office. (Pictures will be posted on the event soon.)

03.28.10Marine Park Places First in National Competition

The Marine Park Jazz Ensemble earned First Place in the Festival Disney National Competition with a Superior Rating (90 or above). The ensemble also won the Gold Mickey Award for having the best overall performance, and Tenor Sax soloist Doug Maffia won the Outstanding Soloist award for his improvised solo during the performance.

11.17.08Marine Park Band Becomes Rock Stars!

On September 20th, 20007, Marine Park Band was invited to perform for VH1 at the 10th Anniversary Gala of the Save the Music Foundation. Students were invited to perform with John Mayer, Jon Bon Jovi and Roger Waters from Pink Floyd. Special guests were Mariah Carey, President Bill Clinton and Conan O'Brien. 11.17.082008 NYSSMA Statewide Results

During the 2008 NYSSMA festival, Ms. Pohl's Jazz Band earned a Silver Medal on a Level 3 Jazz Performance and her Beginner Band earned a Silver Medal on Level 1. Mr. Mazzocchi's Symphonc Band earned a Gold Medal performing Level 4, and his Jazz Ensemble earned Gold with Distinction (the highest rating) on Level 4. Congratulations to all participants! The 2009 NYSSMA festival will be held on Friday, May 8th and Saturday, May 9th.

The Marine Park Jazz Ensemble played in Harlem at Mayor Bloomberg's press conference regarding VH1 Save the Music. This is the fifth time our band has been asked to perform for Mayor Bloomberg. Read the press release at

10.01.06NYSSMA Statewide Results Released

Statewide results of the 2006 New York State School Music Association Adjudication were released this week. The 2006 Marine Park Symphonic Band was the only Middle School in NEW YORK STATE to perform Level 5 Music. All others were High Schools. Our Band received a GOLD rating. The 2006 Marine Park Jazz Ensemble was the only LEVEL 4 group in New York STATE to receive GOLD WITH DISTINCTION HONORS. Congrats to the ensembles!
